Sustainability
We believe sustainability starts with long term commitments and relationships, with our customers and coffee growers alike. Caring is what makes us connected. It also makes us better neighbours and better stewards of our planet.
As roasters, our community is located both locally (the small island on which we live, work and connect with our friends over coffee) and globally (the coffee community at large: the producers, fermentation experts, warehouse staff, truck drivers, café owners, baristas, etc.).
We strive to keep ourselves attuned to the pulse of each of those communities by keeping ourselves informed about the challenges, hopes and learning experiences of those who have their feet firmly rooted in those communities.
In sharing our knowledge, we hope to create a bridge between those communities, between producers and consumers, South of the equator and North, and perhaps discover commonalities at our core.
Our focus is to make our communities more sustainable both locally and globally.
We want to provide great coffee and share our knowledge with local businesses to strengthen a culture that seeks quality products and ethical sourcing.
We work with a wide range of businesses because we see diversity as part of our strategy towards sustainability. Creating learning opportunities is a strong part of our mandate with our customers, their employees and patrons.
We want our coffees to bring depth and meaning into your days.
We hope your appreciation will grow into a sense of connection to the farmers producing the very coffees you love.
Our coffees are sourced from Certified Organic and Fairtrade Certified producers’ co-ops. More than 80% of our green coffee purchases come from Cafe Femenino Programs.
We are constantly looking for new and old solutions to reduce our footprint as a business.
We strive to apply the three "R" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to as many aspects of our business as possible.
We offer an array of packaging options: biodegradable bags, recyclable bags, low barrier bags delivered in totes.
We installed a heat pump in our warehouse for lower energy consumption.
We also installed sliding doors to partition our workspace and minimize heating in some areas.
Our workspaces (office, roasting and packaging facilities) were designed and built with abundant natural light, reducing the need for artificial light during the day.
Our burlap sacks are being re-purposed by community members in gardening, woodworking, rug-making and hand-bag projects.
Our coffee chaff gets used in local gardens and as chicken coop bedding.
Used coffee grounds are composted, or turned into experiments, such as dye for local fiber artists and weavers.
We re-use GrainPro bags for chaff and garbage collection, separately. The strapping from our pallets gets re-used by another local business.
We recycle damaged GrainPro bags (plastic liner bags for burlap sacks). Our delivery routes and schedules are planned to reduce driving.
We do our best to improve our sustainability practices every year, and to strengthen our relationships to producers and customers alike, to hopefully provide all parties involved with living wages and better job security.
